IT’S TIME TO RAISE A GLASS TO THE
NEW WORLD BEER & CIDER AWARD WINNERS.
Michael Donaldson, Chair of Judges, carefully selected 27 experienced independent
judges who blind-tasted and evaluated more than 650 different beers, ciders,
seltzers, alcoholic kombuchas and alcoholic ginger beers to find the Top 30. Blindtasting means judges only see the beer or cider in the glass, never any bottles
or brands, and judges don’t taste any of their own products entered into the
the competition. Michael wrote the tasting notes in this leaflet – using the
judges’ original tasting notes, he then re-tasted each brew and compiled the
reviews. Cheers to that!
Top 30 beers and ciders are available in all liquor-selling New World stores
nationwide until 30 May 2021, or while stocks last. As many are brewed in
small batches by independent breweries, supplies may be limited – so our
advice is to buy them when you see them!

Combo of hoppy goodness and a caressing
caramel, toffee malt is hard to beat when
it comes to complex and satisfying
flavour. This version is unfiltered which
allows the hops to really shine against the
flavoursome but gentle malt base.
Clean, vibrant hop characters deliver
citrus, peaches and woody pine. The
malt base has some complementary
biscuit notes but is well contained and
lets the hops play out in a lively fashion.
Hops deliver complicated layers of cedar,
spice, mango and peach – with licks
of citrus and a sappy resinous quality.
The malt sweetness wraps up all those
flavours in a soft blanket before the
bitterness pushes through.
Easy-drinking IPA where flavour is
stuffed in like down in a sleeping bag –
there’s lots of flavour there, but it doesn’t
feel too heavy. The judges loved this
“uncompromising IPA” where the hops
“come through and dominate”.

Super-dry, light and airy with a delicate
mouthfeel like a lager. But because it’s an
IPA, it’s still loaded with hops but they’re
used in a way that minimises bitterness
and gives the perception of sweetness, in
this case like a tin of fruit salad.
