ESHIMANO OCEA JIGGER REVIEW OUTTHERE DOING IT TEST FIRED By Peter Francis Hunting & Fishing New Zealand, North Shore & Westgate re fyou are inclined towards high end, super smooth, precision engineered reels for light to medium tackle, then you are going to want to take a closer look at Shimano's new flagship jigging overheads, the OCEAjiggers, that have had their first upgrade since coming on to the market in 2011. At 5800 a pop, they are certainly at the pointy end of the market, but you get what you pay for in fishing gear and these reels are made with performance strength and durability in mind.Quality gear will ast you for life if you look after it, and these are reels you ought to be very happy to keep for a long time e series was designed specifically for slow pitch jgging and Shimano is claiming a massive reduction in reeling resistance as a result of refined Quality gear will last you for life if you look after it, and these are reels you ought to be very happy to keep for a long time. Pete Francis mechanics something Shimano is renowned for-Specificalty its infinity drive system where the pinion gear is now held by the spool shaft, adding greater strength and durability as well as smoothness. It also has an upgraded forged long crank handle, as well as a new clutch lever, both significant ergonomic upgrades on the old models. They are available in three sizes with a 1000HG,a 1500HG and a 2000HO model available, all with a 300m capacity of PE2, PE3 and PE4 respectively. The two smaller versions both weigh inata paltry 405 grams, have a 6.4:1 retrieve ratio and a maximum drag capacity of 7kg. Shimano NZhave only brought in the high gear (HG) models as these are better suited to New Zealand's conditions where most will use the lighter models for snapper fishing In a practical sense they are effectively glorified snapper reels and they will take your work-up fishing experience to the next level with the silky rformance you'd expect from a top end Shimano reel They are both capable of targeting larger fish but you'd be a little under- gunned taking one of these two smaller versions to the Three Kings or the Ranfurly Banks to target kingfish. The 2000HG is a bit beefier at 595 grams and an 11kg drag capacity, but l'd say still a bit light for targeting XOS models where the bigger brakes of a Talica would be better suited.I love lure fishing with light gear for snapper and it's the 1000HG that Inaturally gravitate toward I've been playing with this reel, matched perfectly on the new Shimano Kaos 64 one piece Over Head 20-30lb rod, and it makes for a spectacularly presented combo. To be fair I haven't had it for long and the biggest fishl've played so far was a mere 5kg kingfish, but that was enough to strip a bit of line and the drag performance was silky smooth, as l expected. I'm looking forward to thrashing it on some larger specimens, where 've no doubtit will continue to impress. Peter's favourite OCEA/Kaos combo retails for just $949.99! Other options see page 69.
