HUNTING E FISHING NEW ZEALAND, DARGAVILLE
tthe time of writing, we were relieved that the Covid traffic light
system meant that we were good to go ahead with our planned
roar trip. For many of us particularly in the northern end of the
country, the opportunity to again plan to get out hunting was
top of mind. And when it comes to planning a hunt, an important part of
hunting preparation should always be to get those knives sharpened and
ready. Often a downed animal is in a difficult spot to gut or butcher, and it
can be bad enough struggling because of the terrain, let alone battling a
blunt knife. In fact, the joy of using a favourite knife that you have sharpened
and prepared yourself prior to the hunt, willmake this part of hunting a
satisfying experience as apposed to a battle. The finished product will also
be something you will be prouder of back at camp or when you process the
cuts further at home. Knowing knife preparation is a vital part of hunting, but
a skill in itself that noteverybody has had the chance of learning, it's great
that companies like Lansky cater for all levels of sharpening experience. By
the way, the Lansky Sharpening systems work for all other types of knives
A
To help you select the best system for yourself, you need to
understand there are three main packs available, all work by the same
principle. The trick to choosing the right sharpener depends on your
personal needs and your skill level. Someone who has been sharpening
knives for a long time will feel perfectly at home freehand sharpening on a
bench stone, someone with less experience in knife sharpening on the other
hand will do better with one of the controlled angle sharpening systems
which have made Lansky famous worldwide.
The Lansky controlled angle sharpening system is a guided system
that will give your blade a professional razor-sharp edge. The kits include
ambidextrous knife clamp with guides for 17", 20°, 25°, and 30° sharpening
angles. Once you attach the knife to the clamp you select the angle required.
This system allows you to sharpen both sides of the blade at the same angle.
The system comes in several abrasive options, including alumina oxide,
diamond, and Natural Arkansas. The system is great for regular users and
beginners alike.
Generally, the higher the grit number the finer the edge, to give you an
idea of what grit selection may look like, here are the hones that come in the
Lansky Deluxe 5 Stone system -
- Extra course (70 grit) for re-profiling your blade
- Course (120 grit) for edge reconditioning
Medium (280 grit) for regular sharpening
Fine (600 grit) for frequent touch ups
- Ultra-fine (1000 grit) for polishing
All hones are replaceable, and we have a great honing oil available at
our stores as well. So happy sharpening and get that knife ready to make the
precise cuts for head-skinning a trophy this roar, or at the very least, ready
to take the prime cuts from a plump 'eater. You are not going to take a full
sharpening system into the hills, so check out the Lansky Blade medic or
Pocket Sharpener for touch-up work, perfect to stow in the day pack. While
you're at it, treat all knives in the house to a birthday, and if required Hunting
& Fishing also sell a great range of First Aid kits for all your needs!
too, like your fillet, kitchen and farm knives.
