HUNTING E FISHING NEW ZEALAND, NELSON
n purchasing the Breakthrough Vision Series Hard-Case Cleaning Kit,
I the first thing I noticed was what good quality all the components
were. The durable case is packed full of all the best items you need
to ensure a thorough dlean. I was particularly impressed with the
Battle Born High-Purity oil as it had little odour which was great as it meant
that I didn't get an 'ear infection' after cleaning my rifle or shotgun on the
coffee table where a stray drip might have ended on the shag pile!
The Military-Grade solvent also included in the pack is made of distilled
petroleum products, completely clear, non-toxic, and odourless. It will remove
copper fouling, plastic wadding, lead, and other firing residue which can build
up, particularly because of repetitive shots heating up the barrel metal.
When cleaning a firearm, I start by applying the solvent internally into the
barrel of my rifle or shotgun, plus l'll treat any external parts that think need
an application of solvent. Iallow it to soak in for around 2 minutes, giving it
time to break down the carbon or plastic build-up. Iwork the nylon bore brush it's just not worth it when compared to the option of taking 10 minutes at the
down the barrel and the double ended brush on any of the external parts I've
treated, to scrub off the built-up residue. Iwipe off any external residue and
work a patch down the barrel using the brass patch holder or in the case of
shotguns, the mop, until clean.
Icover all the moving parts with the High-Purity oil, leaving this on for
around 2 minutes so it bonds with the metal. The oil is high grade, eco-friendly
and non-hazardous, therefore safe to use on your firearms. The oil spreads
evenly over the surfaces and covers a large area with a small amount. I use a
coth and the cotton mop to remove the excess oil, leaving just a fine residue
to prevent further fouling on the firearm. If needed, I apply grease to the
magazine floor plates, hinge, and any other moving parts on both my rifles
and shotguns, especially before any long-term storage. I use the cleaning
patches or a cloth to wipe off any excess grease.
Before hunting, I run a Pull Through or Cleaning Rod through the barrel
to clean any excess oil out, or any obstruction that may have entered while in
the safe. Fortunately, the rods in these kits are multi piece as l always take my
Cleaning Rod or Pull Through in the field especially during duck season, where
a misfire or a wet cartridge only partially discharging can leave you with
a wad in the barrel. When this happens, it's always hard to find a stick straight
enough and long enough to push down the barrel to clear it! In fact, this
should be a last resort as you run the risk of adding to the obstruction!
The Breakthrough Compact Nylon Pouch Kit option is also great as it fits
on my belt and comes with a Pull Through brass patch holder, bronze brush,
cleaning patches, oil, solvent, and grease. It's lightweight and fits in anywhere.
A well cleaned and oiled firearm is something to be proud of and is cheap
insurance, especially when you've invested for years of reliable use. Neglect
greatly increases the possibility of a malfunction when out in the field and
end of each hunt to properly maintain your gun. When not cared for, firearms
will be at risk to barrel fouling, excessive residue and carbon build up, rusting,
internal water, dry moving parts that need lubrication to work etc. All these
scenarios create accuracy or reliability problems. The last thing you need is
a rifle with accuracy issues when the shot of a lifetime presents itself, or a
shotgun that won't cycle when you take your first shot on opening morning!
