HUNTING!

ne of the great things about hunting is that it tends to be
them comfortable. They can now be fully kitted out in the type of clothing you
I intergenerational. There are so many things to learn to be a successful will be wearing yourself, including waders and rain gear. All the while you will be
hunter and it's easy to take many of them for granted. Humans have
relied on the ability to hunt to survive for thousands of years, so it
is no surprise that even kids brought up in an urban environment, have a deep
inherited desire to venture out, and an instinct to hunt, fish and gather. Don't get
me wrong, some don't, but the sad thing these days is that many kids never get
the opportunity to find out for themselves, one way or the other.
A starting point to determine interest is to involve the young ones in the
social side of hunting, the preparation, the processing of the game for the table
etc. Buying some modest gear like camo clothing, a basic duck call, their own
headlamp, even a couple of decoys they can call their own, all makes them feel
part of the scene and they love this. They can practice on the call, set the decoys
on the lawn and generally 'play hunt'. When they are old enough, they can tag
along on simple quick hunts where you set out to make their enjoyment a greater
priority than your own success. Match the length of the hunt to their attention
span, talk them through what is going on, take some favourite snacks, and keep
indoctrinating them on the safety aspects of hunting and firearms.
The step to allowing them to shoot a gun should start privately and well
before any hunt. Gun handling and safety with an empty gun, followed by simple
target shooting until you are satisfied they are safe. If they are still under 16,
and/or not holding their own gun licence, then they must be supervised by a
firearms licence holder at all times. Supervised means only one firearm between
the mentor and the learner. Hunting & Fishing New Zealand stores carry a
selection of .410 shotguns which are ideal for learning with. We also stock 28,
20 and even 12-gauge shotguns which are scaled down to suit smaller shooters.
Have a browse through this catalogue or better still ask for advice at your
Hunting & Fishing New Zealand store. Fish & Game have made junior hunting
licences very affordable to encourage kids to participate, think back to how you
got started in hunting, then make a pledge to introduce a youngster (or not so
young person), to gamebird hunting this season. The more participants there are
in this activity, the more tolerant the non-hunting public will be!
