THE LATEST AND GREATEST GEAR FOR THE NEW SEASI..
BADLANDS SACRIFICE PACH
DEANO OFFICER ASHBURTON STORE
Badlands has long been a name synonymise with high value, quality gear and of course
the best no-BS warranty on the planet. A year on from its launch the new Badlands Sacrifice
pack is living up to that title. We're not sure why its named Sacrifice'. No detail has been sacrificed in its
design, so maybe at a 56L capacity it's made with the hard-ass hunter in mind, one who will sacrifice the
luxuries, to hunt hard and cover the country. At just 1.8kgs its surprising to learn that it has been constructed
around a rugged hardened steel frame. With 8 pockets it makes loading and organising packed items easier
and quick to find. It's top load main compartment at 38L has plenty of space for all the necessities for a high
volume day pack with room for boned out meat of course, or it makes a serious lightweight multi-day pack
The top pockets are also adjustable for length/height for carrying oversized loads (trophy of a lifetime etc...)
If carrying burdening loads the Hybrid Hypervent suspension system is awesome for helping prevent
exhaustion and back fatigue. This system keeps the pack off your back surface which spreads the load,
allows your back to breath, helping you keep comfortable, balanced and sure footed under the heaviest
One often over looked, seemingly minor feature is the positioning of the back and side safety strapping, the pro's at Badlands have placed
these cunningly in a way that keeps the pack balanced and prevents strapped-on loads from causing the pack to lose its shape. The back straps
help retain valuable items packed in the outer pockets (eg spotting scope and tripod) stopping them from pulling the pack outward.
All'n'all the Badlands Sacrifice pack is a well thought out design, highly functional for the kiwi hunter/tramper
manufactured from high quality materials and carrying that amazing warranty. At $399.99 it's an investment that
will last for years, justifying it's value in terms of becoming a favourite and essential part of the kit. Designed by
hunters, for hunters, yet a tramper will be equally impressed with its practicalities and durability.
TRAVERSE BARREL BAGS
LARRY DOUGHERTY CENTRAL OTAGO STORE
The Traverse range of barrel bags are designed to cover a wide range of
uses and are rugged enough
to take the punishment dealt by the average Kiwi.
There are three sizes, 65, 85 and 115 litre capacity. They are made rugged, but are soft
enough that they don't want to fight you when you're doing up the zips or when
you're holding them open to put your gear in.
They have robust carry handles and YKK zippers. There's a zipped mesh
pocket inside the lid, to keep your valuables handy, or to hold your small bits that
you don't want to dig deep for. They have a reinforced base for extra protection
against abrasions and, possibly the best feature, tuck away straps that can convert
these bags into a backpack I use the 115 litre one to carry and protect my gazebo.
It has been on several 4WD trips and one trip to Stewart Island where it doesnt
get treated very well
I have a 65 litre version in which I carry gear on my four-wheeler during
hunting trips. On a helicopter hunt recently l used this bag to carry my gear. When
we were dropped off it was pouring and we had to make a mad dash from the
chopper to our campsite. It was easy to use the shoulder straps and put it on my
back so l could carry other gear. It sat in the rain until our tent was erected and kept my gear inside dry
I can think of plenty of uses for these versatile bags. I just need more excuses to get "out there doing it.
