Hunting & Fishing New Zealand, Manawatu
oping to shoot his first Sika Stag.Blair Gillam (Hunting &
Fishing Manawatu) along with colleague Andrew Mcgregor
Chris Ziesler of Beretta New Zealand, Trin Batt and his guide
Greg Duley of NZ Hunter set off to Ngamatea Station. With
80,000 acers of free range hunting bordering the Rangitikei
river, there were plenty of huntingotons vailable.
After spending fifteen years in a wheelchair, Blair has proven that
physical timitations are no boundary, as long as you are determined and have
a strong mind set. "We had a blast" says Blair, after spending three nights
and two days hunting Sika deer and shooting gongs at long range
On their first day, after passing up several stags Blair managed to shoot
anice 6pt cull Sika stag at 460 yards with a 7mm Saum. Later in the trip
using a 'Lunatic' custom built by Greg Duley, Blair was able to hit a gong at an
impressive 1800 yards.
Blair described the accessibility of Ngamatea Station as "perfect."
Access was made easier by having wheelchair-friendly ramps to huts, along
with wide door openings and vehicle access to most places, This is mainly
thanks to the hard work and vision of Ngamatea Hunting Safaries head
Bruce Bates. "Iwas appreciative of how we managed to move around the
place," Blair said. "The factis that those of us with physical limits are stil
willing to get out there and rough it too, and it's great that there are so
many people willing to help us." Anexample of this was when the rest of
the team acted as "carriers' for Blair when the ground became too rough
for him to charge his wheelchair through while getting into position to
shoot his stag
After ten years with Hunting& Fishing New Zealand, Blair has
encountered numerous physical challenges, and he and he says "it's
all about motivation when someone feels they cannot fulfil their
desire to be adventurous."To anyone physically disabled Blair points
out that: "It's amazing what you can do with a positive mind set and
being prepared to learn more, along with the assistance of
Blair wishes to thank everyone that made this trip possible
and a special thanks to Chris Ziesler for capturing the trip with
some awesome photos.
