CANAL FISHING By Thomas Racz Hunting & Fishing New Zealand, Invercargill ith winter approaching and freshwater fishing opportunities being a bit more limited the Canterbury High Country Canals around Tekapo Twizel are a great option as they are open for fishing all year. Most people that are interested in trout or salmon fishing will now be aware of the Trophy Brown and rainbow trout that live there as well as the salmon all in reasonably large populations. Before my first trip to the canals I was made to believe that anyone could go there and catch a Trout or Salmon with a good chance of it being double figures with very little effort. Well that for me couldn't be further from the truth as I did six or seven, three to four-day trips over close to 2 years with only catching smallish salmon and trout and seeing numerous very large trout that couldn't catch made it extremely frustrating. Although not catching much I was definitely learning and as I kept telling myself sooner or later it will happen and sure enough finally I landed a double figure trout and at 15lb not a monster for there I was stoked, and I haven't looked back The cooler months through Autumn and are definitely my favourite time to fish there as the fishing seems to be more consistent so if you can deal with some very cold temperatures and the likes of rod guides icing over there can be some good fishing to be had. There is generally more flow in the canals around this time of year and at times the water can be a bit discoloured due to some snow melt filtering through from the lakes which feed the canals, which Certainly helps your chance of success because the trout and salmon have less time and less visibility to decide if they will bite. Dawn and Dusk are still the prime fishing times and they seem to last longer in the cooler months as opposed to over summer when they can be very short. Using the right gear can help greatly increase your chances.A rod of somewhere between 7'6" and 8'with a light sensitive tip combined with a quality reel of around the 2500 size spooled with 6-10lb braid with 6-12b fluorocarbon leader. This combination will give you the power to land a trophy sized fish but also allow you to cast light lures and rigs etc with ease while also giving you the sensitivity to detect what at times can be extremely soft bites which will allow you to strike and hopefully set Most well-known fishing brands have now developed sets primarily for the canals and At Hunting& Fishing New Zealand we stock a wide range starting from $99.99.So whether you are keen to try the canals for the first time or if you haven't had much luck there so far call in instore and talk to us because as I have learnt having the correct gear can make a huge difference. the hook. 186 Trading Terms &Finance Options-see page 241
