New Zealand owned and operated since 1979 is a huge achievement for any company, let alone an outdoor brand. Most outdoors people have grown
up with the Domex brand, I know I did. The very first sleeping bag I purchased for the outdoors was the Domex Pioneer Endurance. How times have
changed.
Domex spent 12 months developing their range of down sleeping bags with input from Greg Duley (NZ Hunter Adventures). The brief was to get a
compact down sleeping bag, close to 1kg, with a temperature rating of -10 degrees, while still offering ample room for Kiwi hunters/outdoorsmen.
The key was getting the right down for the job. The Halo (and Halo Plus) have high quality Nikwax hydrophobic white goose down, with a loft power
of 800+ (Loft power is how much air the down can trap to keep you insulated-the higher the better). The Halo has a down fill weight of 500 grams and the
Halo plus has 800 grams. Not all down is created equal, and these specs are high in both quality and performance. Another great feature is the Nikwax
hydrophobic treatment of the down meaning it will repel water, so it will retain loft and keep you warm in damp conditions.
The Halo is specifically designed to be roomy in the shoulders so you can extend the comfort rating from three seasons to four seasons by wearing
a down or synthetic insulated jacket inside it for extra warmth. It also comes with a 5-year warranty. With all these features in mind you can understand
why the Halo is one of the highest selling down bags in the country.
Having used this bag for the last couple of yearsl am in a pretty good position to comment
on it. Whether in the Kawekas in winter or the Kaimais in summer, this bag has been one of the
best gear investments I have made. Getting a good night's sleep is vital, so your sleeping bag
must be warm but still lightweight enough for backcountry/high-country multi-day exploits.
Bang for buck in a down sleeping bag with these specs, it is pretty hard to go past a Halo.
This autumn Hunting & Fishing New Zealand have
an outstanding deal for customers looking to upgrade
to a new Domex Halo/Halo Plus (standard size or XT).
We are throwing in one of LED Lenser's new H7R Core
headlamps worth $199.99- another great bit of night-
time kit at technology's leading edge.
