HOW TO JUGGLE CONFLICTING
BY BRIANNA TRAN
Just as in life, you encounter
people of different personalities,
temperaments and dispositions
in the workplace. There are some
who you might instantly get along
with, and others where a relationship
might be more of a struggle.
Every person is unique, and everyone
comes with their own set of strengths
and weaknesses. Recognising what
a person is good at and the value
they add to the team may help you
to respect them more and value their
opinions, even though they might differ
from your own. Equally, it's important
to know your own strengths and
weaknesses so you don't see a person's
contributions as threats to your own.
However, at work, you cannot simply
walk away from the people with whom
your personality conflicts or your values
differ. Learning the skills to cope with
different personality types can set you
in good stead for when challenging
Here are five tips to help you manage
different personalities in your workplace
or day-to-day life.
Many workplace issues are the direct
result of poor communication. Gaps
in communication leave room for
people to make assumptions, or for

BE A TEAM PLAYER
Remember that you are both on the
same team! While you might prefer to
work alone, it's better to stay involved
with your team and not close yourself

bounce ideas off other people helps to
create a comfortable and collaborative
work environment to work towards the
more effective to walk to someone's
desk for a quick in-person discussion,
rather than firing emails back and forth.
On the other hand, a simple emailed
message can be a considerate gesture.
Consider your tone, too - the problem
with written communication is that it
can lack a clear tone, so sometimes
meeting in person is a better option.
STAY OUT OF OFFICE GOSSIP
LISTEN AND EMPATHISE
While it can be entertaining and is
usually harmless, office gossip can lead
to awkwardness, disrespect, and even
more serious situations like bullying.
Try to maintain a non-judgemental
attitude and focus on how you react
to situations. In a group situation, try
to redirect the conversation toward
Empathy is a highly-important trait,
especially if you're in a management
position. Listening to another person's
perspective and taking an empathetic
approach to the situation shows the
other person that you've considered
their feelings and opinion, and there's a
much greater chance of finding a fruitful
outcome in a conflicting situation.
