A bit fiddly
It’s possible to sharpen drill bits using
a drill-powered or standalone sharper,
but this can be fiddly and complex
– especially with spade or brad-point
bits. Also, some specialised bits such
as the Irwin Speedbor range are not
designed to be sharpened.
Freshen up
Some cutting tools are designed with
easily replaceable and inexpensive
blades. Snap-off utility knives have
about 10 cutting edges on each blade.
Even their solid-blade counterparts

have double-ended blades. Coping
saws and hacksaws can also wear
down their teeth relatively quickly,
so as with utility knives, it’s good to
keep spare blades on hand.

never keep them in the car or a metal
shed in direct sunlight. For lithium-ion
batteries, it’s recommended to keep
them charged to at least 30-50 per
cent during storage. If you only use your
cordless tools a couple of times a year,
recharge them every three months.
Never attempt to DIY a damaged
power tool cord – duct tape could be
a lethal solution! Instead, contact the
tool manufacturer to have the cord
replaced by a qualified repairer.
Ensure maximum longevity for the
batteries of cordless tools by storing
them in a relatively cool, dry space;
Keep in mind…
Always wear the recommended safety gear
when using power tools.
n If sharpening drill bits, wear eye and ear
protection as well as a dust mask, to help prevent
the inhalation of tiny particles of metal.
