Make sure you choose
the right safety gear
for your project
4
It’s incredibly rewarding to revamp old
timber or metal furniture. But always
wear suitable attire – a dust mask,
eye protection and durable gloves are
suitable for light sanding and scraping.
If using solutions containing volatile
chemicals, such as strippers or
cleaners, Philip Hill advises wearing
goggles, rubber gloves and a respirator.
“If the room where you’re working can’t
be adequately ventilated, only work
for short periods of time,” he adds.
Tori Clutton of Feast Watson says,
“When applying a timber floor stain,
it’s a good idea to wear goggles and
gloves and keep your work area well
ventilated, with open windows and
doors where possible. Using a two-inone combined product, such as Feast
Watson timber floor stain and varnish,
in your chosen colour, will help reduce
the amount of steps required to
complete the project and achieve
a beautiful finish.”
Keep in mind...
Sanding and staining floors
Refinishing timber floors can transform
a space and it’s a job you can tackle
yourself with a range of floor sanders
available for hire at Bunnings‡.
First prepare floors by punching
down or removing any nails, screws,
tacks or fixings. Follow the instructions
supplied with the floor sander to
correctly fit the sandpaper belt to
the drum, making sure you’re using
the right grit for your needs.
Before turning the machine on,
position it parallel to the wall leaving
most of the floor in front of you.
Once you start, move forward and
maintain a slow, steady pace, and
always make sure the power cord
is well out of the way of the sander
while you’re using it. You’ll also
need to wear standard safety gear:
enclosed footwear, protection for
ears and eyes and a dust mask. Once
your floors are sanded and the debris
is cleared away, then apply the finish.
